How to record and edit your voice online

Most online voice recorders give you one long take and a download button, which leaves you with the cough, the false start and the long pause still in it. The Emaki Studio Recorder lets you cut those out: record, drag over the part you do not want, delete it, and the rest closes up. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. Here is how.

1. 1. Open the Recorder and press record Open the Recorder and press the round red button. Your browser will ask for microphone permission the first time - that permission is what lets the page hear you, and the audio still stays on your device. Speak, then press the button again to stop. Your take lands on the timeline as a waveform.
2. 2. Cut out what you do not want Drag left or right across the timeline to select a range - a cough, a false start, a long silence - then choose Delete selection. Everything after it slides back to close the gap, on every track at once, so a voice and the music under it stay in step. Prefer to keep the timing? Use Silence selection instead and the range just goes quiet.
3. 3. Split a take and move the pieces Put the playhead where you want a cut and choose Split at playhead. Each half becomes its own block you can drag along the timeline or trim by its edges. Nothing is ever written over: a split just moves the boundaries, so you can drag an edge back out and the audio is still there.
4. 4. Add music underneath Choose Add audio file to drop a music bed on its own track, then set its Volume lower than the voice and give it a Fade in and Fade out so it does not start abruptly. The free plan mixes two tracks, which is a voice plus one bed.
5. 5. Export a WAV Press Export. Everything you have done is mixed down and saved as a WAV, which every phone, editor and podcast host will accept. On a phone the file goes to the share sheet so you can save it straight to Files.

Is my voice uploaded anywhere?

No. The Recorder runs entirely in your browser and the audio never leaves your device - there is no account and nothing is sent to a server. Your browser will still ask for microphone permission, because a web page cannot listen without you allowing it.

How long can I record?

Free takes run up to five minutes each, and you can record as many as you like onto the timeline. Pro raises a single take to fifteen minutes. Whatever the limit, a take that reaches it is stopped and kept in full - nothing you recorded is ever thrown away.

Can I undo a cut?

Yes. Every edit is undoable with Ctrl+Z, and no cut ever touches the recording itself - trimming just moves the boundaries of what you hear, so you can always drag an edge back out and recover the audio.

Why WAV and not MP3?

WAV is uncompressed, so it needs nothing special from your browser and it never quietly loses quality. It is a bigger file than an MP3, but every editor, phone and podcast host accepts it, and if you need an MP3 afterwards any upload tool will convert one.
